Community Service

Service Learning is an integral part of the Nea Community Learning Center.

To prepare our learners to be stewards of their community, all learners must accomplish a minimum number of community service hours per year according to their grade level.

  • TK - 2nd Grade - 4 hours
  • 3rd Grade - 6 hours
  • 4th Grade - 8 hours
  • 5th Grade - 10 hours
  • All Upper Village Grades - 20 hours

Service learning opportunities are shared with learners and families via email, flyers, and through facilitator websites.

Service Learning Rules and Requirements

  1. Service learning must positively impact the community, the school, the environment, or a group of people.
  2. Service learning must take place outside of Nea seminars and electives. Most activities carried out for Green Team, Leadership, etc. do not fulfill service learning hours as these courses are part of the Nea curriculum. Exceptions may be made if the activity goes outside of school hours and is pre-approved, or if the facilitator organizes an activity in addition to the Nea curriculum. For example, exceptions have been made for: tending the garden, the recycling program, tutoring other learners.
  3. Service learning must take place outside of your immediate family (no babysitting younger brother, etc.). Look for outside organizations, not individuals. Seek non-profit, governmental or religious organizations that positively impact the community, the school, the environment, or a group of people.
  4. Learners are encouraged to take part in both long-term (several months) and short-term community service opportunities.
  5. Service learning may be done over school intersessions and breaks.
  6. A reflection must be completed at the end of each project.
  7. Learners must fill out the Nea Community Service Log Sheet.
  8. Learners should submit their Log Sheets and reflections to the Nea Office.
